Wahu Surfer Groms Comps

Frothing grommets will be aiming high with the dates announced and entries open for the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps.

It is the only national competition series to fully cater for the micro groms from Under 8 through to Under 14 and has been confirmed for 10 events across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania.

The Under 8 will be a mixed division with parent assists, while competition will be held in both boys and girls in the Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14 divisions.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys\’ and girls\’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.

Contestants need look no further than a recent winner for inspiration.

Western Australia\’s Jacob Willcox returned last month from Nicaragua as the World Under 16 Junior Champion. Jacob was helped in his early start to his competition success through winning a number of Wahu Surfer Groms Comps.

Willcox was part of TravelSIM Team Australia which also returned with the teams\’ gold medal and included several surfers who have figured prominently in previous Wahu Surfer Groms Comps, including: Luke Hynd (Qld), Eli Steele (Qld), Kai Hing (Qld), Chris Zaffis (NSW), Quinn Bruce (Qld), Isabella Nichols (Qld) and Holly Wawn (Newport).

Former World Junior Champion and winner of both the main event and the junior men\’s division at the 2012 Australian Open of Surfing, Matt Banting, is another previous Wahu Surfer Groms Comps winner to go on with his competition success.

Wahu Managing Director, Tim Britz said the company was proud of its support of grassroots surfing in Australia.

“I continue to be encouraged by the evolving and expanding nature of this dedicated national competition for micro groms and the development platform it offers aspiring young surfers in advancing their skills through gaining competition experience,” Britz said.

“One only needs to look at the success of some of the past event winners to see the springboard effect.”

“The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps will give more than 800 children around Australia the perfect way to experience a surfing competition for the first time and in a fun environment,” said Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark. “There\’ll be plenty of activities on the beach with Wahu prize giveaways.

“The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps is a fantastic junior surfing program and acts as an excellent pathway from our grassroots VEGEMITE Surfgroms program into a fun competition experience. Once again the winners of the Under 14 divisions will be given the opportunity to train with the best coaches in Australia at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.

“We\’d like to thank Wahu for their continued support of the series and also its support of our VEGEMITE SurfGroms national junior participation program.”

Each entrant will also receive a Wahu Surfer Groms Comps t-shirt for entering, plus a Wahu beach product.
