Otis Carey’s Surf Film Premier – ‘Kill the Matador’

OTIS CAREY

Otis is a indigenous Australian surfer that grew up in Coffs Harbour. He competed as a junior in his younger years riding mainly for Mambo. He then moved to Sydney, which meant surfing a little less until re-igniting his career around 3 years ago when picked up by Misfit Shapes and Insight.

He then scored a wildcard in the Boost Airshow at Bondi after winning the Arnette Roulette series competing against the likes of Jordi Smith, Julian Wilson and Josh Kerr.

He then picked up additional sponsors Arnette, Surf Dive ‘N’ Ski, Gravis, Matuse and Gorilla as a result of his increasing profile.

A solo film project was then initiated by Pat Pearse in late 2011, beginning filming in early 2012 with the support of Surfing World magazine and all of Otis’s sponsors.

The film follows the travels of Otis through parts of the US, South America, Indonesia and Australia. The film is a visual human interest piece (Otis) meets traditional punk surf film with an artistic undertone.

There will be 3 Australian premiers – Manly, Byron Bay and Otis’s home town Coffs Harbour.

We would like the Coffs Harbour event to be a celebration with all of Otis’s friends, family and Indigenous community, as well as showcasing how good of a surfer Otis is to the local community. We want it to inspire and pump kids up to surf more, hence learn to surf morning with Wink and kids from the community.

The night will then be about a few beers (kindly donated by Corona, who love getting behind artistic surf projects) and premiering the film.

Kicking off with Matt Devitt Duo from 4pm in beer garden, followed by the first ever Coffs screening of Otis’s Surf Film, Kill the Matador – on the big screen! from around 8pm. Free entry in the beer garden!
